Hurricane Florence Disaster Relief: How You Can Help Out

September 17, 2018

Hurricane Florence hit the coast of North Carolina on Friday morning and left disaster in its wake. We are overwhelmed by the number of people we have seen giving back and looking for ways to contribute to disaster relief since Florence struck. As Sylvia Mathews Burwell once said, “While natural disasters capture headlines and national attention short-term, the work of recovery and rebuilding is long-term.” Our beautiful coast is looking at a long road to restoration but we as a community can help in numerous ways.

If you’re local to the Triangle Area, there are small businesses participating in donation drives and contributing proceeds to Hurricane Florence disaster relief efforts.

+ Head over to Full Steam Brewery in Durham, NC today and grab a beer – they’re donating 10% of proceeds to disaster relief. In addition, they’re taking supplies through the end of the day today to send to those impacted by the storm through Carolina Cavalry. Visit their website or social media pages for more information on what items to bring.

+ Lynnwood Brewing Concern has partnered with Carolina Cavalry to take supply donations throughout the entire week. Visit their Facebook page for more information on items to bring.

+ Crank Arm Brewing Company is also partnering with Carolina Cavalry to take donations throughout the week. They’ll be hosting a block party this Saturday, September 22nd and taking donations all day. Check it out, support local business, and help give back to our fellow North Carolinians.

If you can’t make it out to Full Steam, Lynnwood, Crank Arm or other participating businesses you can donate online to a number of organizations that are running disaster relief fundraisers.

+ Carolina Cavalry is a local group that formed during the storm and in 48 hours their Facebook page gained over 1,000 followers of people who wanted to help give back. For the time being, Carolina Cavalry is focusing specifically on relief efforts in the New Bern, NC area and may increase their coverage pending their success in New Bern. They have created a GoFundMe with a goal of $250,000 as well as an Amazon wishlist of emergency supplies. We’ve linked their Facebook page for you to find more information on how to donate through this group.

+ Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC has several locations where you can take donations of food and other supplies that those affected by Florence will need in the coming days, weeks, and months. Their Greenville, Raleigh, and Durham locations are currently operating on normal hours. You can also contribute with a monetary donation via their website.

+ Convoy of Hope has sent disaster relief teams to the coast with truckloads of supplies and volunteers ready to help where needed. They have a Hurricane Florence fundraiser as well as opportunities to sign up and volunteer with them.

+ GoodBookey is featuring United Way of the Cape Fear Area as the charity of the week in their College Football Challenge where you can donate $5 to UWCFA to play the weekly college football pick ’em for a chance to win prizes. All donations made this week will go to their Hurricane Florence fund. You can also visit their website and make donations directly.

+ Last but certainly not least the American Red Cross is taking donations specifically for Hurricane Florence. Visit their website for more information on how to donate.

If you’re looking for other ways to assist, there are hundreds of animals that have been displaced from their homes as well as their owners. Local shelters need your help to provide for them.

+ Reach out to the Wake County SPCA if you are local and want to contribute. They are taking donations to help provide for the influx of animals coming to Wake County shelters from Eastern NC.

+ The Greenville Humane Society is one of the largest no-kill facilities in the Southeast. They are holding adoption fee specials to encourage adoptions in order to make room in their shelter for animals coming from the coast.

+ You can make donations to the Humane Society of Charlotte which anticipates taking on an additional 40 animals early this week. They will need donations as well as supplies to help provide for these animals. We’ve linked their Facebook page for more information on how to help out.

+ The State Fair Grounds opened up as a shelter for animals from Carteret and Craven County. At this time their volunteer needs are fulfilled but they are still looking for donations of dog food, cat food, cat litter, cedar shavings, and bird food to be dropped off at VCA Apex, 1600 E Williams Street. For more information visit the Peak Lab Rescue Facebook page. In the coming days, they will be distributing these animals to shelters or trying to reconnect them with their families.

We know it can be overwhelming to find ways to give back so we hope this helps provide some direction. If you know of any additional ways to assist with Florence relief send us a shout and we’ll post it. People helping people is truly a beautiful thing.
