Honoring Our US Veterans

November 10, 2018

Veterans Day falls on November 11th of every year and originated as Armistice Day on November 11th, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed the name of the holiday to Veterans Day in 1954 in order to honor all veterans that had served in an American war. Canada and Great Britain, amongst others, also honor veterans of World War I & II with Remembrance Day and Remembrance Sunday. It’s also known that some countries can be found observing two minutes of silence at 11 AM every November 11th. The United States Veterans Day, unlike Memorial Day, honors all veterans, living or deceased, for their service in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans make up roughly 7% of the US population according to the US Department of Veterans Affairs and in 2016, veteran-owned businesses made up 7.2% of the United States’ employer businesses. Carimus is one out of 398,453 employer businesses that are majority veteran-owned. Veterans Day is very special to us at Carimus because of our coworkers, our friends, our family that has so graciously served. Today we want to highlight our veterans as a special thanks for all they have done and continue to do for our country.

Tony Pease

Tony, our CEO and Founder of Carimus, from Herndon, VA, served as a Nuclear Machinist Mate in the United States Navy for six years. He and his wife, Anita, were stationed in Hawaii from 1997 to 2003 and relocated to Raleigh after their service. Tony went on to receive his undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University and served as a key member of the ownership teams at two tech firms prior to founding Carimus. Tony has always wanted to make a difference in the world, big or small, through his career. He once said in an interview, “in my past work experience I established good methods for solving commercial problems for pay. However, what I really want to accomplish is how to solve social problems for pay. At Carimus, short for Care I Must, our social impact is our motivation.”

We are both proud and honored to have Tony leading the Carimus crew.

Brian Buland

Brian, our CFO, is originally from Yuma, Arizona and received his undergraduate degree from North Carolina State University.  After graduation, Brian served in the US Marine Corps as a Captain for four years. He went on to obtain his graduate degree and began working with companies like TROSA and Carimus, that believe in social impact as a service. Additionally, Brian is heavily involved with organizations like Stop Soldier Suicide, the first national veteran-founded-and-led 501(c)3 non-profit focused on the prevention of military suicide. Post-military career, Brian continues to serve the men and women of our country through his professional career.

We appreciate the exceptional example you’ve set for each of us, Brian!

Anita Pease

Anita, our Charity CHAMPION, is originally from Mobile, AL, and graduated from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga with a degree in Nursing. She went on to serve for eight years as a Captain in the Army Nurse Corps. Anita is now the Executive Director of Small Hands Big Hearts United, a 501(c)3 organization that creates an environment for children to generate, plan and implement ideas that have a positive impact on the world around them. She has also assisted with the acquisition and onboarding of all 34 charity partners we work with through GoodBookey.

You have served our country as well as our community in more ways than one and we hope to be half the human you are when we “grow up.”

Zach Johnson

Zach, our Associate Consultant, grew up in Smithfield, NC and attended Campbell University where he played college baseball and obtained his undergraduate degree. A few years after graduation, Zach joined the United States Army where he served in US Army Special Operations Command for five years. Zach began working at Carimus as part of his transition out of the military because he too values the idea behind companies executing for-profit activities that will create high social impact. He is also involved with organizations such as Stop Soldier Suicide, working to prevent military suicide. In addition, Zach is currently an MBA candidate in the Executive Program at UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Not only do we have a high regard for your service to our country, but also for your determination and work-ethic in everyday life.

We are eternally grateful to all of the men and women that have bravely served in our United States Armed Forces and we are proud to work amongst some of the finest. We hope you’ll join us in thanking our Veterans today and every day for their sacrifice. Happy Veterans Day from the Carimus crew!
